Alla prima as Josh Carlton describes is simply "all at once" meaning instead of doing all the line work, then all the shade work, then all color. You go in and start painting the tattoo in and take it to completion before moving to another area save for whites. Do those last.

Does that also mean you're doing it totally freehand? No stencils, no bloodlines, no nothing - you just dig in, so to speak?
